Do you only think, or you’ve decided that you want to start a wholesale business, there are some items that you must spend a lot of time researching and planning before full steam ahead. Planning and the fact that right up front not only can save you from a lot of heads at the beginning, but it also can mean the difference between the success of wholesale versus monetary disaster waiting to happen.
In this article we will give you ten tips to help guide you along the way that you start planning for your business. They are presented in chronological order so that you can use it as a way to plan the steps in the right way round. Remember, the success depends on many factors – and the most important factor is the determination and energy to put in to make your business a success!
Step 1: Ask Yourself Why?
Why do you want to get into the wholesaling business? This is because you will enjoy working with other companies and manufacturers as the main point of contact between the two? Or because you think it is an easy way to make money fast?
Wholesaling is a demanding business, and may require more capital up-front, warehousing, logistics planning and customer service skills. As the main channel between producers and retailers you can find yourself dealing with the hundreds of thousands of units of goods that need to be sent across the country at the time of notification. Large retailers often pay on a Net 10 or Net-30 schedule, which means payment made after the goods to be sent. What will you do if the retailer does not pay or go bankrupt before you receive payment?
Step 2: Study your Competition
This is not good to enter a market where there have already made, a credible product to wholesalers. Retailers want to know they have a dependable source of supply that meets the requirements, and they often will not change wholesale to set up a product. Just because you build a warehouse does not mean that they will come.
Use the local Chamber of Commerce, the Internet and even with a visit to the wholesale stores know what is in your area. If you want to specialize in certain products, please contact the manufacturer directly to find out who handles the wholesaling them already in your region. There may be not in your country, or there could be three down the road.
